Meet at the Camanche South Shore
Staging Area - Directions below
Activities: We will be
planting 50 Elderberry seedlings around two ponds
near the Camanche South Shore Staging Area.
This project is suitable for youth and families
Why:
Volunteers are pleasantly surprised by how good they
feel, both physically, and mentally, after spending
the day working with great people in a beautiful
setting on such a worthwhile project. Typically,
during a Trailbuster Work Day, the Ranger(s) shares
his/her knowledge of the nearby natural and cultural
features. In addition, the Trailbuster Work
Schedule includes outings such as Bald Eagle tours;
Wildflower hikes; Native American Cave Paintings
tours; Gold Rush History tours; the annual
California & National Trail Days hike/work project;
volunteer awards ceremony and other activities.
Volunteers, who contribute 20 hours or more in a
year, receive a Mokelumne Monitor Newsletter,
certificate of appreciation and a volunteer pass
(which entitles them to a 50% discount on parking at
EBMUD’s Pardee and Camanche Recreation Areas) and a
complimentary 1-year trail use permit. Those who
contribute 40 hours or more a year receive the
uniform of the Mokelumne Trailbusters a Trailbuster
Tee Shirt, are invited to the annual Trailbuster
awards BBQ and receive a 1-year, 3-year, 5-year,
10-year, 15-year and 20-year pin respectively.
Volunteers who contribute the most hours during the
previous year receive an award for their efforts.
Bring:
Please bring a bag lunch, canteen (minimum 1/2
gallon), sunscreen, and insect repellent. Also,
please wear sturdy work shoes and a sun hat (long
pants are recommended).
Registration: Advance registration is
required as space is limited. Please RSVP
beginning November 15, to Steve Diers at
sdiers@ebmud.com or (209) 772-8260.
Weather: We will work if there is a light rain.
Minors: Volunteers 16 – 18 year of age need
written permission from a parent or guardian, and an
adult must accompany those under 16.
Tools and Instruction will be provided by EBMUD
Information: Participants under 18 must have
written permission from a parent or guardian and
those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
There is no charge for this event. No pets or
alcohol permitted.
Please no pets or alcoholic
beverages
Poison Oak: You may encounter poison oak. Please
take the appropriate precautions.
Ticks: You will be taking part in an outdoor
activity in an area that ticks may inhabit. The
following are suggestions that will help to protect
one from tick-borne diseases. Wear light-colored
long pants and long sleeves so you can easily see
any ticks. Do thorough tick checks after the hike.
Spray one pair of pants and one shirt with a
repellent containing Permethrin (at least 2 hours
before use) and use an identifying mark on the
inside of the garments to keep track of treatments.
The treatment should remain effective for 6 weeks or
6 launderings of the garment. Spraying
pesticides containing DEET such as “Off” or
“Cutters” on your
skin is not as effective as treating your garments
with Permethrin products. Spraying pesticides
containing DEET such as “Off” or “Cutters” on
clothing is NOT effective against ticks.
Permethrin
products approved for human use are available from
REI. Use pesticides in a responsible manner and
follow the label instructions. Another option
available now is insect repellant clothing –
clothing that comes pretreated with repellant that
stays in the garments for several washes. Insect
Shield(R) apparel and accessories are available now
from
top
brands such as L.L. Bean, Orvis, ExOfficio, REI,
Sloggers, RailRaiders, Outdoor Research, Tilley,
Zorrel, Carolina Manufacturing, Buff and others.
